Checked Baggage

The following entails one-way flights for one passenger:

  • Check-in baggage is calculated according to your flight route, travel class and dimensions.
  • Check with a calculator how much luggage you can take based on the booking trip.
  • Checked baggage is valid only for the selected airline. If the flight is operated by different airlines, the baggage rules may change.
  • Checked baggage must be well packed and attached with a tag name, telephone number and complete address.
  • Checked baggage must not include valuable items, for example, money, jewelry or any  business documents.
  • The maximum dimensions per piece of baggage is 158 cm.
  • Larger and heavier baggage will be carried as excess baggage.

Baggage allowance for children and babies:

  • Babies (0–2 years) are permitted to a free allowance of one item of baggage up to a maximum weight of 23 kg and 158 cm dimensions.
  • Children over two years have the same baggage allowance as adults in each travel class.
  • Child seats, baby baskets, or foldable chairs are allowed on board as additional carry-on baggage.

Excess Baggage

Passengers with checked baggage exceeding the allowance stated will be subject to excess baggage fees per kilogram. 

  • In Economy and Premium Economy Class, a piece of luggage will consider excess baggage when it weighs more than 23 kg and is larger than 158 cm.
  • In Business and First Class, a piece of luggage will consider excess baggage when it is bigger than 158 cm up to 292 cm.
  • If you are traveling in co-operate with another airline, please contact the operating airline for information regarding their excess baggage charges.
  • On certain routes, on Economy Class, travelers can benefit from discounted flat rates for the second piece of checked baggage (up to 23 kg/up to 158 cm).
  • For Economy Class Light fare, passengers can book one baggage item weighing up to 23 kg (no sports baggage) for an extra charge.
  • The charge for the first piece of luggage on the Light fare is not refundable.
  • Baggages weighing more than 32 kg will not be accepted as travel baggage and will be shipped as cargo.

Digital baggage services

  • Reassure your baggage confirmation with the Lufthansa app and digital baggage services. After dropping off your baggage at the check-in counter, it will be easy to set your baggage receipt using the mobile boarding pass on your smartphone.
  •  On some routes, passengers can get a bag tag on their luggage and register it Instead of waiting to get it at the airport.
  • Here are the steps to apply HomeTag:
  • Check in on lufthansa.com.
  • Choose your seat for the flight.
  • Enter the number of luggage you have.
  • Print out the required travel documents (boarding pass or passenger receipt) as well as the HomeTag for your bags.
  • Attach the HomeTag to your baggage using a holder. These holders can be obtained free of charge from Lufthansa bag drop-off counters.

Lufthansa Special Baggage:

Find out how you can take your sports equipment on Lufthansa flights.

  • Sports luggage that exceeds the free baggage allowance will be charged.
  • There is limited storage space available for sports equipment, so you must register as early as possible. 
  • Booking your sports equipment are only accepted up to 24 hours before the departure flight.
  • Sports equipment that exceeds the free baggage allowance but does not exceed the maximum weight of 32 kg will be charged with the flat rates for sports equipment.
  • The items detailed below can be checked in as additional sports baggage. Check the additional fare on sports equipment using the baggage calculator.
  • 1 item of baggage with one fishing rod/1 item of baggage with fishing gear. Dimensions with packing: 200 cm.
  • 1 empty oxygen cylinder in one item of baggage/1 item of baggage, one pair of diving goggles, and one snorkel. Dimensions with packing: 200 cm.
  • 1 golf bag with a set of golf clubs, golf balls and one pair of golf shoes. Dimensions with packing: 220 cm.

Further Instructions for sports equipment: musical instruments

  • Each item should be labeled (inside and outside) with your name and phone number.
  • Large sports equipment is not counted as a free baggage allowance and must be paid separately.
  • Sports equipment that is heavier than 32 kg and longer than 315 cm will not be accepted as travel baggage.

 Musical Instruments:

Passengers can carry their musical instruments inside the cabin free of charge as long as the dimensions do not exceed 55 x 40 x 23 cm (height x width x depth) and the weight does not exceed 8 kg. An additional seat must be booked if our musical instrument exceeds the dimensions of 55 x 40 x 23 cm.

Musical instruments that you wish to bring inside the cabin should have the following instructions:

  • 155 x 42 x 25 cm (height x width x depth) for musical instruments that stand in the cabin
  • 110 x 42 x 50 cm (height x width x depth) for musical instruments strapped to the seat
  • Maximum weight 75 kg.

Forbidden Materials on a Lufthansa Flight

For safety reasons, Lufthansa does not allow specific items to be carried.

  • Acids, alkalis, wet cell batteries.
  • Containers with gas and self-defense sprays
  • Containers with flammable liquids.
  • Petrol-operated equipment and tools.
  • Camping stoves, gas cylinders, filled scuba tanks.
  • Explosives, fireworks, flares
  • Electroshock weapons, e.g., stun guns (tasers)
  • Poisonous and infectious substances, such as mercury, bacteria and virus cultures
  • Heat-generating objects
  • Oxygen generators, liquid oxygen
  • Battery-powered means of transportation (e.g., e-scooters, hoverboards, mini-Segways, Solowheels, electric bicycles). 
  • Oxidising substances, such as bleaching powder and peroxides
  • Security bags or briefcases with lithium batteries
  • Radioactive materials and items
  • Strongly magnetic materials

*wheelchairs and other mobility aids powered by lithium batteries are not affected by this prohibition.

Allowed Materials on Carry-On Baggages 

  • E-cigarettes (prohibited to be used on board the aircraft)
  • Portable medical electronic devices with carrier’s approval (batteries must not exceed 12 V or 100 Wh.)
  • Portable electronic devices containing lithium-metal or lithium-ion batteries as watches, cameras, mobile phones and laptops. The devices must be completely switched off and be protected from damage  (up to 100 Wh or 2 g).
  • Alcoholic beverages with more than 24% but less than 70% alcohol by volume and do not exceed 5 liters.
  • Hairspray and perfumes must not exceed 2 liters for each passenger for both checked and hand baggage.

Delayed and Damage Baggage

  • If your checked baggage is delayed, you can Report a delayed bag with the flight details.
  • Check your baggage regularly from Track baggage status online”.
  • If your baggage is damaged during transportation Lufthansa will take all necessary measures to remedy the damage. 
  • Passengers with the damaged bag will need to report at Lufthansa service counter at the airport.
  • If you have forgotten something on the aircraft or in one of Lufthansa lounges, please report at the Lufthansa service counter at the airport.
