8th April 1946

  • First scheduled flight to Cairo via Asmara (Douglas C-47 Skytrain). In the same year, a weekly schedule to Djibouti, Aden, and Jimma was set. 

1947 

  • 3 Skytrains were purchased for international routes.

2007

  • African Aviation Journal recognized Ethiopian Airlines for its excellent financial performance, route network expansion, fleet modernization, passenger growth, in-flight service, and overall customer care.
  • Ethiopian Airlines was awarded the Africa Business of the Year by the US African Times.

2009

  • An order for 35 aircraft was placed.

2011

  • 3 Boeing 777-200LLRs were received, and 4 777 Freighters were ordered. 
  • The starting of daily nonstop flights to Beijing on 777-200.

2012

  • Ethiopian Airlines established its Second Hub in Lome, Togo.
  • Ethiopian Airlines received 2 Boeing 787 Dreamliners in August and October of 2012. 
  • Ethiopian Airlines became the first African airline to operate B777 Freighter. 
  • Ethiopian Airlines ordered 5 Q400 NextGen aircraft and 1 777-200LR (Longer Range) Worldliner.

2013

  • Ethiopian Airlines received the next-generation Boeing 737-800 with Sky Interior, Boeing 777-200LR Worldliner, and B777-300ER (leased from Boeing).
  • Ethiopian Aviation Academy became the first in Africa to graduate 26 pilots trained with Multi-Crew Pilot Licenses (MPL).

2014

  • Ethiopian Airlines received 4 Boeing 787, 2 Boeing 777F, and 3 Cessna 172 pilot training aircraft. 
  • Ethiopian Airlines ordered 20 737 MAX 8s from Boeing, the largest single Boeing order from an African carrier.
  • As an IATA Authorized Training Center, Ethiopian Aviation Academy joined IATA’s global training partner network.
  • According to IATA, Ethiopian Airlines became the largest African carrier by Revenue and Profit 

2018

  • Ethiopian Airlines had become the first airline in Africa to operate A350 XWB Simulator and repair the GEnx Engine of Boeing 787.

Ethiopian Airlines has the largest cargo network operator in Africa. Ethiopian Cargo is a major global cargo carrier with a modern warehouse of 1 million tons storage capacity. 

Ethiopian Cargo provides freight services to over 125 destinations worldwide. The products of Ethiopian Cargo include General Cargo, Special Cargo, Charter/Lease Service, Mail And Courier, Ethiopian Pharma Wing, and Ethiopian Cargo Express Service. Ethiopian Airlines Check-in Information

Online Check-in is available between 36 hours and 2 hours before departure time for both international and domestic flights. Through it, passengers who have a valid e-ticket can confirm attendance on the flight, select a seat, and print the boarding pass.

Passengers are requested to arrive at the gate 30 minutes before departure time, in case they have no luggage. 
Passengers with luggage have to arrive at the check-in counter 1 hour before departure time for international flights and 45 minutes for domestic flights.

Note that:

  • Passengers booking code share flights need to check in with the respective airline.
  • Web check-in is not available for passengers requesting special services such as wheelchairs, extra seats, stretchers, unaccompanied minors, pets in hold, etc.
